Mr. Saute Sequoia Middle School
Newbury Park, CA Grades 6-8

What type of plant is this? What are the growing requirements? As my 7th and 8th grade Environmental Horticulture students start growing hundreds and eventually thousands of plants in our greenhouses for school landscaping, National Park Service projects and fundraisers, they need to label the plants to answer these questions quickly and clearly. As we begin our new restoration project with our local National Park, the students will need to create labels that can be read and understood by any of the volunteers that help in the project - not just themselves. Currently the students have been using hand written plant labels that fade in the sun, may be difficult to read, and get knocked out of the soil. Some of my special education students have disabilities that prevent them from writing clearly on such a small space. A local university heard about our program and donated 21 thermal label writers that hook up to the computers. These labelers will take the three hour process of printing labels using a network and reduce it to less than a minute. These thermal labels will not fade and can be placed on the container so they will not be lost when the plants are moved. The students can create their own unique labels based on their research of the plants and present designs that can be easily read by the public and each other, with images also. They can be produced quickly so that the student can create it and place it on their plant product right in the classroom, instead of waiting a day or two.
