Our school is a kindergarten through eighth grade school serving a very high-need community. In my first year as the junior high writing teacher, I've decided to be assistant coach for the junior high girls' volleyball team.

Our team has no gym in which to practice, so we practice on the cement basketball court. We only have one volleyball for at least 12 young women. The violence, poverty, and negativity experienced by my students on a regular basis has truly affected their social interactions. I find that they constantly berate and insult each other throughout the school day, thereby creating a violent environment even at school. Coaching the girls' volleyball program is the perfect opportunity to teach these young women the positive social skills they need to succeed in life: teamwork, personal development, and positive attitude.

These young women need more than one volleyball in order to develop the volleyball skills they need to be a competitive team. In doing so, it is my mission to foster a positive, healthy environment to allow for personal psychological, emotional, and physical growth.

Your donation will provide at least an hour and a half of safe haven for these young women who suffer from extreme negative experiences daily. Together, we can cultivate inter and intra-personal skills to help them grow into responsible, healthy citizens.
