Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Speech and Language Pathologist working in an inner city, free lunch school. I provide direct speech and language services to 51 students in grades K to 8. My school is 1 of 34 in a school district consistently faced with a massive budget deficit. I have been working at this school for 6 years and this is my 5th school year without a budget for new materials.

I provide speech and language services to students with a wide range of needs. This year I have had a significant increase in the number of students requiring articulation therapy, specifically in the lower grades. These students are having difficulty communicating in the classroom and many of their classmates can not understand what they are saying. These students are also having difficulty learning to read. They are struggling with sound production. I want to update my speech materials with fun centers to practice their speech production. Many of my current speech pictures are black and white and outdated. (For example, I have pictures of record players and rotary phones.)

I am requesting phoneme cards with current, colorful pictures. The students will be able to practice their sounds while naming the pictured objects. They will also be able to categorize the cards and play games while placing them in a large pocket chart. The LipSync cards will be used during direct therapy to show the children how their mouth should look when producing the sound correctly. These cards will be used by the classroom teacher during class instruction to ensure that the same cues are being delivered to the student. Parents will also benefit from the use of the cards. They will be able to see the exact placement for correct sound production. This will ensure that there is carryover between the therapist, classroom teacher and parents.

Your support of my project will make speech fun and exciting for many of my students while they are increasing their speech intelligibility. These materials will help my students achieve correct sound production in the therapy room. The cards will be used to help generalize the sounds to the classroom and home. By supporting my project you will impact the communication and academic success of many students.
