Learning For All Via Visual Technology

My students need a LCD projector.

  • $1,090 goal

This project expired on February 23, 2009.

Technology makes all learning accessible to all students. I teach 6th grade social studies at a Title I school with vast diversity in both learning levels and English language proficiency. This neighborhood school serves large refugee populations in the area; thus my five classes consist of students whose first languages include Spanish, Somali, English, Vietnamese, Albanian, and Bosnian.

In a school where half of the students qualify for some level of English language services, learning content material is a real struggle. Although many sound like fluent speakers in conversation, when it comes to using academic language, much less in their reading and writing, the students become confused and have difficulty understanding. Additionally, most do not own computers; therefore the vast majority of my students have no idea that there are resources that can make content material more accessible to them.

An LCD projector would enable all of my students to visually experience the content material I discuss; whether with the thousands of online images of artifacts from the Aztec Empire or through the multitude of artwork and video clips that illustrate life in ancient Egypt. Furthermore, by introducing my classes to educational places on the web that are resources for them, students can learn the basics of navigating to these sites on their own when they have access to the computers in the library. Such visual multimedia would greatly support even my English proficient students' learning.

You will make the difference between my more proficient English speakers' learning sufficiently and every single one of my student's succeeding academically. My students have the willingness and discipline to learn, and they are fully capable of doing so. With your help, they can overcome the most significant obstacle to their learning: their lack of English language proficiency. Please support this effort to make all learning accessible to all students.
