The students in my First Grade have already benefited from a series of three workshops presented by the author of Character on Call. In these sessions, my students have been taken on adventures during which a character-based lesson is learned. They have traveled along with the main characters as they struggled to arrive at their decisions - good or bad - and shared in the consequences they experienced. In true storytelling fashion, my students have been taken on imaginary trips which have taught them to care and value each person, and accept and appreciate differences. Whether it's the Poor Little Purple Pumpkin, a story about being different, or Ryan and Katie Meet Joe Lo and Ming Sing, a story about respecting other cultures and traditions, the students have learned to care and value each person. This program, Character on Call, consists of 17 different workshops and includes worksheets, coloring pages, puzzles and promise booklets. It would be my pleasure, and to the benefit of my students, to invite this author to return on a regular basis to teach about friendship, honesty, loyalty and problems which arise from bullying, cheating, anger and more. Often a workshop will reflect a current event which might be troubling a student. My entire First Grade has delighted in the presence of this unique storyteller and they look forward to each visit. The author is willing to travel 150 miles twice a month to present these valuable workshops to my class. Her schedule for the next school year currently has availability for this twice-a-month presentation.
