This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 8th grade Language Arts in a rural North Carolina community, and what I'd like to do with my students next year is a year-long unit on setting goals, higher education, and careers.
I see the need for this in two ways. First, our students choose high school courses at the end of the year. Many students don't know what to take or even what they're interested in. Second, I see a need for college/career education based on the statistics from the county: 58.5% of residents hold a high school diploma, and 8.1% hold a college degree. If we truly want success for our students and growth for the community the students need to be educated.
For my request, I would like funds to create an up to date college/career reference section in our media center. As part of the year-long unit, the students will be required to do research to complete the unit.
