I teach 8th grade science. Half of my classes are gifted/advanced and the other half is standard. I need lessons that can cover as many learning modalities as possible. The K'NEX DNA kits allow the students to actually create a double helix and go through the replication and transcription processes. They can turn an abstract concept into a concrete activity while having fun in the process.

The K'NEX kits actually look like the double helix and the colors represent the nucleic acid bases. I can't imagine a better way to demonstrate this concept. They are made of sturdy plastic and can be used year after year by the entire 8th grade.

This is an extremely difficult concept for 8th graders. I didn't learn about it until college! These toys allow the students to actually build a model of DNA including the nucleic acid bases. Then they can model the processes of replication and transcription with their own hands. Studies show this to be the best way for students to learn.

The K'NEX are very expensive. Our district has had severe budget cuts this year and these types of materials are unavailable. They are well worth the money because not only can they be used again and again but they will have a lasting impact on the students and they will be able to carry the concept on to High School with them.
