Music and a Laptop: a Match Made in Heaven

My students need a laptop computer in the music room that can efficiently operate music software that does such a wonderful job teaching them music theory in a fun, effective, and non - intimidating 21st century manor!

Future wedding announcement? "Laptop computer and Music Ace software to wed in the music room!" I teach General Music, grades K - 5. Our principal and many teachers are fostering a new vision in our school for technology. He and my co-workers are convinced of the tangible way technology can increase learning and motivation in the classroom. I have caught this vision and I know that bringing music software into my classroom can and will change the learning environment to one that is much more hands on, interactive, and most importantly, relevant to students today regarding the way they learn, and to what will be expected of them when they reach the working world. I am convinced through teaching music for 13 years that our society is exponentially more visual than ever before. Music software that packs a strong visual and interactive punch can take learning to a whole new level for music students.

No computer would equal paper and pencil for yet another year. Brand new research shows that students are spending more time than ever using computers and visual images to learn and interact with the world around them. If they are learning through technology in other areas of the school and at home, how important it is that they are able to use it in the music classroom as well!

I am in need of a good quality laptop computer that I can hook up to my LCD projector. This device would allow me to operate music software such as Music Ace, Alfred Publishing's "Music Games" and many, many more. In addition, this computer would allow me to tap into the nearly endless resources available on the world wide web, and be able to use them in my daily music lessons plans. A good example of this is a streaming video service my school is currently subscribed to that belongs to the Discovery Channel. There are many excellent musical instruction videos available on this site. In addition, we could interact with other music classrooms around the country and world and share ideas and performances.

I do not want to ever be a teacher who sits by and is content with the same thing year in and year out. I want to go to bat for my students, and reach out to get the best tools that will help them learn about and appreciate music in a way that is fun, interactive, and relevant to their lives and learning styles. This laptop computer would be the tool for us to take a big first step in that direction.
