I teach sixth grade English Language Arts. My school is currently on the New York State Schools Under Registration Review (SURR) because of our low test scores. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches. One of the major obstacles impeding student achievement in my school is that students do not have access to high-quality literature. In their drive to raise test scores, schools on the SURR list often forget that creating readers for life is just as important as increasing test scores. Resources are spent on test preparation materials at the expense of fantastic young adult literature. My goal for this school year is to create an entire class of life-long readers. I want my students to appreciate the joy, passion and excitement that can be derived from reading a wonderful book. To accomplish this goal I plan on implementing a series of student led book clubs in which students will read and discuss award-winning literature. I am asking for 4 copies of “Just Grace Charise Mericle Harper,” “Clementine,” “Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle,” “Sideways Stories from Wayside School,” “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Chasing Vermeer Blue Balliett,” “The Man in the Ceiling,” and “Head of the Class: Frindle.” You can help by donating sets of books to my classroom. The books will improve student comprehension and fluency and more importantly, teach students to love to read.
