"I hate to read! Why do we have to read this? This is too hard for me. I wish we could read more interesting things!" These are just a few of the many comments I often hear from students lamenting that the books often available to them to read in my class do not "mirror" who they are or the world in which they live. The students in my English course are primarily 9th graders ranging from 14-16 years of age. My school is an urban high school with a very diverse student population. A number of students read below grade level, and they often face great challenge in reading the classical literature that is available to them. This difficulty is usually due in part to their lack of skills in decoding and comprehension, as well as the topic of the selections. I want my students to love to read just as much as I do and understand its tremendous benefits. I believe that if they had access to more contemporary literature appropriate for adolescents in the classroom, they would be more engaged in the process of reading and perhaps begin to enjoy it. In order to get my "I Love to Read" Workshop up and running next school year, I will need a class set of 4 contemporary novels(a class set is 15 books) for each academic quarter. These novels will benefit at least 120 of my own students, as well as students of other teachers (to impact an even greater number of students through colleague sharing). I will implement them into class literature circles, team discussions, and the Socratic Seminar to name a few. Further, these books will be a beginning to a more "love to read" attitude.
