Hidden deep in the urban-decayed wasteland of Maryland lies a small gem: Our elementary/middle school is a safe-haven and a way out of the ghetto for the young people it serves. We are located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Maryland. Walking to school each day, our students pass by abandoned houses, drug dealers, and gang violence. The constant whir of police sirens are a daily reminder that trouble lurks just around the block. And yet, despite the odds, our students persist. They show up and demand their constitutional right to a free and fair education. What we lack in resources, we make up for in compassionate educators, and hardworking students. Two years ago our school had the lowest test-scores in the state of Maryland. But with a new principal who is fully committed to student achievement, we are turning around. I teach 8th grade American history and language arts.

Among the many obstacles that our students face, none is more pressing or obvious than the lack of technology in our classrooms. While our principle has vowed to push us into the 21st century, at this juncture, we lack the resources to get there. In the age of multi-media technology, the children of our school have definitely been left behind. Because they cannot connect to the outside world through technology, our students have been condemned to isolation in their small part of Maryland.

In order to show students how great and vast the world is, I would like to purchase a LCD Project. This donation will give my students a tremendous opportunity to be a part of the changing world. I want my class to be able to critically analyze a congressional debate on CSPAN. I want them to be able to get the News from Africa, Japan and the UK. I want them to be able to watch films about the Civil War and Vietnam. I want them to see with their very own eyes how interconnected we have become and how the world and the United States is truly at the tips of their fingers. Having a projector in the classroom will allow my students to travel to places they could never have even imagined.

Your help will give my students an invaluable opportunity to be a part of the twenty-first century. These students who have been so thoroughly disadvantaged through no fault of their own, deserve the best. By helping us purchase a LCD projector, you will give our students the opportunity to escape from the world they've been confined to. You will also provide the students who are not strong readers a new avenue to learn and become inspired. Thank you the time to learn about the brilliant scholars of our elementary/middle school.
