In my experience as an educator Arts and Music are key components to a well-rounded education. Presently my school has very limited resources for the arts and music. As the Science Specialist and lab teacher I've strived to bring art and music into my Lab. This has happened in any number of ways as in gardening projects with students. Most recently my partnership with Ravinia Festival, an educational music outreach program that provides an artist-in-residence at my school site for 15 weeks free of cost to the school has been a tremendous help in implementing a well rounded educational experience for my students. Chicago Public Schools have limited elementary music education programs. The Ravinia Music Outreach after-school instructional program for our students has helped to fill this void in our student's educational experiences. Our school has a limited budget for the students and would like to provide musical instruments for at least 2 classrooms. The instruments of choice are Recorders. These instruments are basic instruments that can be mastered fairly easy with our student population of first through sixth grades. Two classrooms of approximately 30 students will need individual Recorders. Our populations of students are approximately 30% to 45% African-American and Hispanic students in an urban community on the South side of the City of Chicago. Our students have an entire Science unit of study on Sound which has been adopted by the Chicago Math & Science Initiative that fits perfectly with cross curricula study of Science & Music. The joy, confidence and self-esteem shown as my students perform for the student body, parents and community is just immeasurable. I would certainly like for you to see this transformation in the students through this learning experience.
