I am the Title I Reading Specialist in the lowest socio-economic elementary school in our district. This year's enrollment is at an all-time high, 390, causing overcrowded classrooms. My school is approximately 93% free and reduced lunch and 40% ELL (English Language Learner).

My students walk through the school doors carrying several obstacles that cannot be readily changed. They carry the stigma of poverty and/or ethnicity. Research has shown these students lack language due to intentional or unintentional neglect. Research has also shown auditory processing is a crucial first step to reading. However, many of my students lack the skill since there is typically very little positive verbal interaction within the home.

The "Hear Myself Sound" Phone will assist students in isolating letter sounds, phoneme blending, sound manipulation and more. This phone lets children hear themselves talk so they can focus on what they are saying. I would like to focus on students in Kindergarten - 1st Grade. Those two years are critical in the literacy process. Being able to associate sounds and blends to letters and words is key to later reading success. I would like for each child to have their own phone so they can utilize them in the classroom in small groups, individual reading times, or large groups.

These phones cost only 4.95 each. It seems a small price but to the families in my school it is too much. All of the families in Kindergarten through 1st Grade could not afford to provide that for their child. By purchasing 110 "Hear Myself Sound" Phones, you would be empowering my students. Each student (108) and each teacher (4) would have these tools to utilize in their classroom. These phones will build a stronger foundation in the literacy process!
