The students within my urban fifth grade ELA classroom are a mixture of diverse cultures and socioeconomic background. Vietnamese sits elbow to elbow with African American and poor student by upper middle class.

In order to provide every student with the opportunity for enhancing their learning, it becomes necessary to rely on the kindheartedness of people such as yourself. With this in mind, I am requesting a class set of The Watsons Go to Birmingham which will lead each student on an emotional journey through a period of history riddled with mistakes on all sides.

Your generous contribution to this project will enable these 50 plus students to immerse themselves in history as they connect with the main characters and share their burdens, joys, and courage. As they study the facts in their history class, they will for a short time become a part of that period of time as they read about the life of a young person who experienced it.

Your funding of this grant provides opportunity for a trip in time which will enable 1963 to become more relevant to fifth grade students in the 20th century. Thank you for allowing me to take a trip with students which will allow them to experience through the life of a young person, the realities during that dark time in our history.
