Ms. N. Myrtle Grove Middle School
Wilmington, NC Grades 6-8

I am a first year 8th grade Language Arts teacher teaching 4 Language Arts classes as well as a DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) program for lower level students who really struggle with reading.

Our school has a relatively high percentage of very poor children. I am a first year teacher and am very limited on funding from myself as well as from the school/district. I am working with low level readers who deserve a chance to learn how to love reading with different types of materials.

I am asking for supplies to promote literacy and reading by showing them different methods my students may not have thought about before. Bean bag chairs are a fun way to curl up with a good book. Current event magazines are a different method to teach reading by showing students that you can enjoy reading in different forms other than the sometimes overwhelming novel. Finally, the novel "My Life in Dog Years", by Gary Paulsen is a funny, interesting, vivid novel my students and I can read, and enjoy, together.

Your help will, without a doubt, change the lives of many students forever. You can help promote a love of reading and greater literacy. You will be giving a great gift to my students, the joy of reading, something that they will have for the rest of their lives.
