Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach all subjects for a 5th grade Spanish bilingual class at Sanchez Elementary School in the Mission nieghborhood in San Francisco. I teach 25 students, 19 of whom come from Spanish-speaking households. Most parents work 2-3 jobs each, often graveyard shifts, in order to support their families. Their income is low, and as a result extra funds for games at home is left to a minimum. As a daughter of an immigrant from Greece, I learned easy math skills early in order to compete with my family members by playing backgammon.
Every Friday, we have a game-playing afternoon called "Free Form Friday." Unfortunately, we need more games. My proposal is to have each child have a backgammon game (25) to play in the classroom and to take home with them over the summer. The reason they need to each have a game is to facilitate their addition and multiplication skills in a fun learning environment. By having a hands-on, fun experience with math on a weekly basis, the children will want to teach their families how to play and learn over the summer. With the donation of the backgammon games, we will have backgammon tournaments and students will have an opportunity to earn prizes. As their main teacher, I think backgammon is an exceptional tool to teach simple math that students otherwise find difficult, often relying on their fingers and other instruments. As they enter into middle school next year, they will still have the backgammon games at home to encourage use of their math skills.
I would like my students to quickly add and multiply in order to move their backgammon pieces and compete in a fun way using math skills.
