Do you remember all the exciting worksheets you did in school? Me neither! That's why as a classroom teacher I am always trying to remember what held my attention and stayed with me as a young learner. The bottom line is to remember what we understand and do. This project will allow our class to apply what they have learned, become the expert, and hold onto that knowledge so the next teacher can build upon it. I teach fourth grade in a rural school. I am responsible for teaching my young learners everything they need to know in math, science, and social studies.

My fourth grade students take their first high stakes test this year. All students in the fourth grade must pass state standardized tests to be eligible for promotion to the fifth grade. It is extremely critical that students retain what they learned to succeed. Capturing their learning on film is a great way to accomplish this goal.

Students will be able to use pictures to capture their learning by finding evidence all around them. For example, students can go on a scavenger hunt for geometric shapes, items that meet density, volume, mass, length requirements, energy transfers, erosion at school, etc. They can take pictures as they conduct science experiments to document what the process or findings, and include them in their science journal, thus reflecting throughout the year on what they did (learned). We all like to look through memorabilia with pictures, yet, I've never seen students go back and look at old worksheets just for memory's sake.

If you are able, please consider helping to create the kind of classroom we would want for our children; a place where they are challenged every day to learn, apply their knowledge in meaningful ways, and walk away from it not only understanding something new, but wanting to share what they learned. What better way to share than through pictures? When these students are asked, "What did you learn in school today?" Help them reply with, "I'll show you."
