I am a school counselor in a K-8 rural school located in Watauga County, North Carolina. Recently, we have been experiencing an increase in the bullying behavior that goes on in our middle school. However, students have been reluctant to come to school personnel due to fear of being teased more or getting their perpetrator in trouble. In an effort to combat bullying in a way that the students feel comfortable with, we have started a Peer Mediation program. Peer Mediators have been chosen for next year and a description of the program has been given. In order to effectively train these peer mediators, we are in desperate need of good training materials. While I am qualified to teach the mediation program, this school does not have the materials for me to effectively do so. I feel that having well trained mediators will allow the students a more comfortable environment to work out their conflicts and free up some time for me to deal with the more serious issues. Often times he said/ she said issues, while important, are pushed aside so that I can deal with issues of abuse, drugs, etc. Through peer mediation we can hopefully address all of these issues and not have to prioritize. I did perform an interest survey earlier in the year and 95% of our middle school students said they would be willing to use peer mediation as an alternative to fighting. Please help us make this program a success and enable us to purchase mediator manuals, a leadership manual, and video guide.
