I am a school counselor at a middle school in Alabama that houses approximately 600 7th and 8th grade students. I visit classrooms each month and share lessons with all of the students in the school.

A couple of years ago at the request of one of our students, we began something called Disability Awareness Week. During the observance of disability awareness, we have various community members with disabilities come visit our school and share their experiences with our students. Our focus is on making our students aware that those with disabilities are just people like them who find creative ways to overcome the challenges of life. After all, we all have challenges we face in life at one time or another. We want our students to focus on the abilities of others rather than their disabilities. We stress that all people should be viewed as individuals with value, including themselves.

I want to use these harmony bracelets as a tangible reminder for our students to focus on the abilities of themselves and others. I plan to incorporate the project into a classroom guidance lesson on disability awareness.

So many students today lack a sense of empathy due to the obstacles and challenges of today's world. Disability awareness is one way to help our students understand what empathy is, and it is one avenue we have for helping them to internalize and express it.
