Science Notebooks and Assessment

My students need a projector to help visualize the concepts taught during science notebooking.

I teach a 7th grade science class. Our school is year-round in North Carolina but my track has a heavy focus on students with special needs.

Many of my students come to my class without an elementary background in science. Focus is put onto math and English since those subjects are tested. I also have students who are only mainstreamed for science class and need any extra visualization and kinesthetic practice they can get to help them learn the states science topics. These students will be given a science test at the end of their 8th grade year and some questions are based on their 7th grade year. In the past year I have started to implement science notebooking. This is one of the truest forms of inquiry because in some instances, the students are creating their own questions to answer. Students are following the same method used every day by scientists in their chosen fields. I ask that my students report out their claims and evidence. Since I have started to implement science notebooking, I have seen a drastic increase in student understanding, learning and confidence. It has been the best opportunity for the students to show what they can do and for me to assess them where they are. I can individualize instruction using science notebooks in a way I never have been able to before.

With a projector, I would use my own money and get the other materials needed to make a Smartboard. The students would use the projector to report their claims and evidence from their inquiry labs. I already have access to a cart and a laptop with the needed materials loaded onto it. I would use the projector for the students to be able to load their information on the laptop and then have the projector for the class to use to see and interpret results. It would also allow interaction between the teacher and students during their reporting. An assessment of student learning could be done immediately and given appropriate feedback. Their findings could also be saved and re-used in similar situations or in compare and contrast with other groups and their findings.

You will make it possible for my students to perform inquiry-based science in its truest of forms. Students will be able to use technology to complete and report out findings and will be able to get clear, precise and appropriate feedback from their instructor.
