I am a seventh grade English teacher in an urban middle school where over 50% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. My average class size is twenty-five, and I see writing talent in my seventh graders bursting at their seams.

My students are highly visual and kinesthetic, always making connections and participating in lessons. My students love to help each other and work together; they are eager to share their work and explain it each other. The result: intense and excited learning. A problem that we face, though, is that students cannot see each other's writing when we share and get feedback from the class. For example, a student read her introduction and explained how she had used an ellipses to create the effect of thoughtfulness. The problem was . . . there were too many students to crowd around her group table, and she needed to keep her work to continue working. None of my students have time to pass their writing around to the class. As a result, other students from cannot benefit fully from their explanation of writing decisions.

My students need a document camera so that they can share their writing with the class during our share and feedback time. A document camera does several things for my students: 1. It enables students to use their own writer's notebooks, allowing their writing to be more authentic and for students to have more control over their writing. 2. They can share their work and learn from each other, creating a more authentic learning experience. 3. Students can live authentically in the moment by using their personal work and not be separated from the learning experience by having to write something special to display they may never see again. An authentic experience is necessary for students to truly learn and understand how their work fits into the real world in which they must live.
