This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
School: Pullman school is multiethnic urban school in the historical Pullman area. Many of the students are reluctant readers, especially the males. Many are from single family homes, where emphasis is not placed on reading. This program will provide the necessary impetus to motivate them to become independent life-long readers.
Activity: Hearing these "Real Men Read" will stimulate the students to want to listen and read high quality literature, thus improving their listening and comprehensions skills.
Summary: Students in grades 3 & 4 in an urban school setting often only hear women reading stories on tapes and in the classrooms. In an effort to stimulate increased interest in reading in minority males, we will ask prominent local male figures to record a selected children's literature book on tape and forward it back to the school for students to utilize in their listening center. The male participants will include the Mayor of Chicago, local politicians, local male media personalities and sports figures, as well as local community leaders.
