This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
What kid isn't curious about everything that creeps and crawls? My students definitely are!!!I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher at Irving School on Chicago's west side. There are very few self-contained special education classes that serve preschool and kindergarten-aged children in the Chicago area, therefore, my students are bussed from neighborhoods throughout the city. To qualify for services in my classroom, the students are either significantly developmentally delayed or diagnosed with a specific disability such as autism, cerebral palsy, or a genetic disorder. I currently service 14 children with chronological ages from 3-6 and developmental skills from 12 months through 5 years.
I want to brings nature into my classroom for my little ones to explore and learn from. Living in the city, my students rarely get a chance to explore bugs, plants, and other creepy-crawlies. I want to create a hands-on science center with a habitat for plants, frogs, butterflies and bugs to grow and enchant the children. I am requesting books, manipulatives, and even live bugs for my classroom!
The children will delight in learning about nature first-hand. With exposure to science and nature, my children will learn new concepts such as caring for living creatures, experimentation, measurement, identification, and (best of all) curiosity!
