Improving Organization Skills of Young Math Prodigies

My students do not learn math by using a textbook, but rather handouts from an online resource. As a result, they need 50 math binders with 100 tab dividers so they can be well organized and master all 7th, 8th, and Algebra math skills.

Mr. c.
Grades 6-8

I am a 7th, 8th, and Algebra teacher at a Title-one school in Maryland. I teach in a high-need community where the majority of my students receive a free or reduced lunch.

The Problem My county does not use text books for math (2nd-8th). As a result my students receive a lot of handouts! If they are unable to keep these handouts organized...the handouts make a mess in students' lockers and backpacks until they eventually wind up in a trashcan. As a result some students are not retaining the skills I teach and I usually need to make new copies of previous handouts. Most of my students' families struggle to make ends meet. While I've provided a considerable amount of materials to meet my students' needs, it is getting to the point where providing such materials is getting beyond my own means. The big question entering my third year...How do I make sure all students pass the MSA (Maryland State Assessment for 2nd-8th graders) and are indeed successful math students? My students have been successful on the Maryland State Assessment as well as in understanding the fundamental concepts of math. However, they could be doing a lot better if they were organized. Step one is having the materials in order to be organized.

If my students have binders and tab dividers they will be able to place vocabulary, process charts, notes and handouts in logical well organized places. They then will be able to use these handouts to help guide them with their homework and other future classwork. They will also have these notes to study and prepare for quizzes and tests. I believe if my students have the essential materials to maintain organization and are then taught organization strategies they will be more successful overall students (not only math).

Organization is a necessary skill in any workplace or environment, not just school. Your donation will help our students become smart, well-organized individuals. I believe they will be able to better study and retain information. The end result being...100% of students passing the 2009 math MSA.
