Mrs. Davis Tryon Elementary School
Tryon, NC Grades PreK-2

I teach kindergarten in a primary school with a number of under-privileged children. The school I teach in is a public school.

One area that many of my students enjoy working in is our block area. When children are working in the area of blocks, they can create, construct, and represent experiences from their life. However, we only have the basics when it comes to these materials. I would like to increase the imagination and creativity of my students by having some other block materials available for them. Many of my students have not had access to block play in the past. Having more materials for them will benefit my students during the coming year and for years to come. Block play helps children in each are of development. It will increase their imagination, as well as teach them the importance of taking turns, sharing and taking care of school materials. It could also spark the interest of a future engineer or architect. Block play also helps children with their language development. They can learn new words for things they are building or for describing their projects. They can also increase their writing skills by making signs for buildings that they construct.

To give my students better opportunities when playing in our block area, I would need blocks in other shapes and sizes than what I already have. I would also need blocks to represent vehicles, buildings, and signs. I would also need a block shelf to keep my materials on.

Your help in this project will make it possible for my students to have some of the extra supplies in class that are not already available to them. It will also help the children have more valuable learning experiences in our classroom. They will be able to learn math concepts, such as the number of blocks it takes to fill a certain space, which blocks weigh the most, or the name of the shapes of the blocks. It will help the children in other areas, too, such as social studies (places people can go and how they live), science (building animals homes or habitats), the arts (children can build with blocks to make a setting for dramatic play), and literacy (labeling the different objects that have been made in blocks or reading signs that have already been made. Your help with this project will help my students in all of these areas and will help them have experiences that I can not financially provide on my own.
