Engaging Math Students with Technology

My students need a document camera to make it easier for them to share their work and learn from each other.

Please help me make math class more fun and interactive for my students! I teach sixth grade math at an urban middle school. I have four classes ranging from advanced academic to special education inclusion.

One major obstacle I face is lack of student motivation to learn math or be active participants in class. I frequently find that students have trouble connecting what they learn in the classroom with their lives and even more trouble feeling motivated to learn at all. Sixth grade is also the year that math becomes more difficult for many of my students who lack solid basic math skills, and many often become frustrated and sometimes just give up. Add to that a challenging, crammed curriculum and intimidating state-wide testing, and you get a recipe for disaster.

I believe that having a document camera in the classroom will enable my students to take a more active role in their learning and will also facilitate more learning from their peers, which can be incredibly successful at the middle school level. At my school I have access to an LCD projector, which I often use in lessons, but we do not have a document camera in the building. I know having one would provide another whole dimension to my students' learning. Technology is a wonderful way to boost student engagement and empower them as learners. They will be able to instantly share their work with one another, whether they are working independently or in groups, and will be able to critique and support each other throughout the learning process. Document cameras can project two-dimensional objects such as work on paper and pages from books, as well as three-dimensional objects such as projects and math manipulatives like spinners and number cubes. I have used document cameras as a student in my own classes, and recognize their ability to energize and motivate a class of adult learners. Imagine what one can do for a group of sixth-graders!

Your help in providing a document camera will excite and motivate my students to learn and share math at an age when math class often becomes difficult and frustrating, for both students and teacher. I am already planning lessons and looking forward to the new school year in eager anticipation of sharing this wonderful technological tool with my classes. Please help me make my dream of a document camera a reality and help a worthy group of students learn math in a whole new way!
