Children are poets but don't know it. The lack of exposure to fun and entertaining poetry has stifled our childrens' ability to enjoy and appreciate poetry. I teach 5th grade language arts and I hope to produce a class full of poets!

POETRY CAN ROCK A CURRICULUM! My goal is to integrate poetry across the language arts curriculum. Poetry can be used to teach the parts of speech, the writing process, and examples of figurative language like similes, metaphors, personification, idioms, etc. Some of the greatest poems can be found in the book "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Shel Silverstein. Oh, the fun we could have reading the poem "Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich" together as a class!

Having a class set of these books would afford each student the opportunity to explore and experience the fun and entertaining poetry of Shel Silverstein. As a class we could read how "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out." After reading this funny poem, the students could make a list of the items of garbage mentioned in the poem. Teacher could use items listed to engage the students in a discussion about nouns. The nouns in the poem are "way cooler" than the ones we might find in the boring old textbook! The class could go on an adjective scavenger hunt after reading "Peanut-Butter Sandwich." This poem centers around a young king who would eat nothing but peanut-butter sandwiches. The [young] king had [peanut] butter all over his [royal] gowns and [golden] crowns. This poem is packed with adjectives that the students can "hunt" for. The students could then go on to write their own poems about their favorite foods. The possibilities are endless!

Your donation will make it possible for my students to be exposed to fun and entertaining poetry that they will never forget! I hope that reading the poems will inspire the students to create their own poems. Who knows, one of my students could be the next Shel Silverstein!
