I teach in a small rural Title 1 PK-5 school with 200 students. About 60% of our students receive Free or Reduced lunches. Due to recent budget cuts State Wide, there are no funds available for classroom supplies above and beyond textbooks. I will have 38 second grade science students of varying abilities from Special needs and ESL to Gifted this year. All second grade students at the school come to my class during the day for science instruction. I teach in a high needs school.

The Florida Sunshine State Standards require Second Grade students to learn a wide range of information and skills. Unfortunately, Science is one of the subjects that falls by the wayside. With reading, math and writing instruction being the major focus, it is left up to the classroom teacher to make science instruction fun and interesting.

My students need science materials to help them grasp the concepts taught to them in class. Being low income students, many of my students do not have the science background experience to fully understand abstract concepts. Extra Science instruction will be integrated into daily reading and writing lessons. My students need quality literature that they can read and understand. It is for this reason that I ask for the Life Cycles Readers books. I would like to use these during reading instruction. My students also need a concrete example of the life cycle standards that they are required to understand. It is for this reason that I ask for butterfly nursery and life cycles pocket chart I think that the combination of both of these items will allow my students to truly see the way things grow and change. My students need to understand the functions of major body systems. The Take-Apart Human Body will allow them to see and understand the location and interdependence of the major body systems.
