Hello Everyone! I am the band director at an inner-city public vocational high school in New York. It was my job to create and implement a music curriculum when I began teaching here 3 years ago- something that really hadn't existed in this school ever before but has since exploded with interest, talent, and enrollment. My school is an ever-expanding and improving school for students wanting to pursue careers in engineering, mechanics, and the like. Being mostly composed of boys of black and Hispanic races, this school is truly unique. Students come from every corner of New York just to attend - some having to make a two-hour commute by public transportation every morning. The staff and administration are amazing people who are incredibly and selflessly dedicated to giving students every opportunity to learn and be successful in life. Here's the deal: We have a concert band. A darn good one. Now it's time to add a jazz band to the program! Why jazz? One, it's truly American music. Two, it forces students to think outside the box musically - they are not just reading notes off of a page, they are creating their own music through arranging and improvising. Three, it gives young minority youth the chance to experience music - amazing, complex, beautiful music - created by people of the same race and cultural heritage. In jazz band, we will have guitarists, saxophonists, clarinetists, flutists, trumpet and trombone players. We will have a solid rhythm section with a drummer, electric bass player, and pianist. Student vocalists and Latin percussionists will work with the jazz band on special tunes. What an amazing opportunity for the students of my school to show off their shameless talent to the community and New York! As many of you know, a strong, challenging music program is a valuable asset to any school. Students not only have the chance to learn how to play a new instrument, but they are also given the opportunity to learn about world cultures, work in a team to meet a goal and create an artistic product, raise self-esteem, become more creative in their everyday thinking, make new friends, and gain recognition for their school through performances and contests. As I have worked to witness this program take shape over the last few years, it has become glaringly obvious how absolutely vital this music program is to our school. Students stay late to practice instead of going home, getting bored, and joining gangs. Students who wouldn't normally speak to each other become best friends. Seniors going on to college receive scholarships. Two things our jazz band needs in order to complete the instrumentation and true "big band" sound is 1) a baritone saxophone, and 2) a vibraphone. Both of these instruments are excellent investments that will serve students for years in the music program, but they are simply too expensive for our school to afford. Having a baritone saxophone will give students a chance to properly rotate saxophones on a regular basis, giving them a more comprehensive knowledge of their instrument, and having a set of vibes will help my percussionists with music theory, scales, and melodic issues percussionists don't deal with when they're doing the "boom crash" thing on a drum set all day. All good teachers know that their students are special. I would do anything to give mine the chance to create this jazz band and take the music program to new creative heights. I am asking for your help because no student should feel as though they are any less deserving of a quality school music experience. Thank you for your consideration and help!
