Teaching Literary Elements Using Monster

My students need 32 copies of "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers and 1 audio cassette of the book.

I teach at a large Illinois elementary school. The school is racially isolated - African American. I teach a split 6th grade self-contained class. My students are from low income families and are all eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of literature, I want to instill that love in my students. It is with books that knowledge can be gained about new cultures and insights can gained from reading about one’s own culture. Knowledge is power and being able to accept all people, even those with different cultures than ones own, is something I want my students to learn. I also want my students to be able to analyze and critically discuss literary elements.

Unfortunately, here in our city there has been over 100 public school students killed between today and September 2007 by gunfire. I would like for my students to read the book "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers, which deals with an inner city 16 year old boy being accused of first degree murder.

This story is told in the first person and written as a screen play. Not only will my students be able to relate to the protagonist, because they, like him, come from a large city and are economically disadvantaged, they will learn valuable life lessons about choosing one’s friends carefully. In addition to life lessons, this book will allow me to teach many literary elements such as: theme, character, irony, foreshadowing, mood, symbolism, stereotyping and conflict.

I have 32 students in my class and I would be very grateful if you were able to fund a book for all of my students. This would be a great experience for my students and would continue to mold them into life-long lovers of literature.
