This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am both a Reading and English teacher at Harlan Community Academy High School. 75% of the students are from low income homes. Currently my classroom is in need of classroom sets of dictionaries, thesauruses and one encyclopedia set.
These resources will be used to expand their vocabularies, which in turn will directly improve their overall comprehension and word knowledge. Research shows the more vast a student's vocabulary the better the comprehension level of the student will be.
The encyclopedia sets will be used to further the students inquiry. Our classroom does not have computers and many of my students do not have computers at home. So, the classroom set of encyclopedias will serve as a tool for students to further their inquiry skills. Which, is also connected to improving comprehension because prior knowledge of a topic increases ones comprehension of the text. Our students have very limited experiences, so often when they read texts their comprehension is decreased because of their limited prior knowledge.
I thank you for considering funding my proposal. These resources will be used to improve the comprehension of Harlan's students.
