Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a California school- 7th grade life science. Next year, I will be teaching both 7th grade life science and 8th grade physical science. The school has 876 students with an API score of 734/6. The school has a 51% Hispanic student population; 45% of the students are on the free/reduced lunch program; 24% of the students are limited English proficient. Almost half of my students fall into the low social economic group; many of their parents work multiple jobs and are not proficient in English. My class parents and I voluntarily contribute to the class science fund but our funds are extremely limited. We would greatly appreciate your donation.

My science class needs some basic prepared microscope slides. In our units, we cover some very abstract concepts – concepts that are sometimes very hard for students to visualize. Imagine being 12 years old and trying to visualize concepts such as mitosis, meioses, animal vs. plant cells, and the six different animal kingdoms. Through your generous donations, I hope to augment theses units with microscope labs.

For example, students can observe and compare mitosis vs. meiosis microscope slides; compare prokaryotic vs. eukaryotic cells; study a leaf epidermis cell and actually see the stoma of a leaf. During our unit on the “Six Animal Kingdoms” and “Earth’s History”, I bring in live animals (ducks, chickens, snakes, hissing cockroaches, plants, etc..) from all the kingdoms and modern ancestors from a time era. My class is lovingly referred to as the “zoo”. I would like to augment this unit by having several microscope stations with protista, bacteria, fungi, plantae, and animal slides. Students can relate cellular biology to organisms. These labs also help develop my students observations skills, note taking, and conducting labs. It also raises their awareness that so many diseases are based on a cellular/genetic level. These studies also connect cells with genetics.

Through your generous donation, these slides will allow my students to visualize cellular biology; compare and contrast the different organelles found in prokaryotes/eukaryotes cells and plant/animal cells. It will add a deeper dimension to their understanding by allowing them to observe the cellular world of life. Perhaps, there is a doctor or a cellular researcher in my class. These supplies are reusable; will be shared among the two science teachers; and serves approximately 300 students for many years.
