I work in a rural school with a free and reduced lunch rate well over 50%. The administration has agreed to add a class called "Mass Media" to the curriculum for 2008-2009. It is an elective course that will be offered to 11th and 12th graders who have an interest in professional and technical writing. The student and community response has been overwhelming. People are genuinely excited about the opportunities that this class presents.

Over my three years at the school, several students were given the opportunity to make their own short films and newsreels. These were aired on the school's closed circuit televisions and the student body responded energetically to each. This is where the idea germinated. Unfortunately, one key ingredient is missing. The only camcorders that the district owns are VHS dinosaurs. They only have analog capabilities and will increase this teacher's workload tremendously.

In order to give as many students as possible the chance to create and edit video, digital camcorders are absolutely essential to the process. I have already purchased the laptop computer with the video editing software necessary to do the job. Each student will have equal access to the broadcasting equipment in my classroom. Each of them will have a seat in the director's chair.

With your donation you will make it possible for me to open up new avenues of writing to students who continually display apathetic attitudes toward the exercise of putting a pen to paper. The modern media targets these students with such intensity, and this is their chance to be part of it. With your help, each one of them will get a chance to say, "Lights, cameras, action!" with a smile across his or her face.
