Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Army Brat" - that was me! As my family and I moved from Army base to Army base, the first place my sister and I wanted to go was the library. I have vivid memories of my parents reading to me before I knew how to read. I guess that's when my love of reading soared, and I became an independent reader. Now as an adult, I still have the love of reading in my bones. I currently teach 4th grade in a large urban school district. My school serves a predominately Hispanic population. The school is located in a low socio-economic community.

Some of my students arrive straight from Mexico with little or no reading skills. Having minimal reading skills hinder their success in reading and other subjects, as well, since reading is a universal skill. Oftentimes they are embarrassed to read aloud, because of their poor reading ability which lowers their self-esteem and affects their academic success.

I desire a classroom literacy library for my students. It would include fiction and nonfiction books. I envision two large beanbags in the reading corner, so students can relax and enjoy reading in comfort. They can do "buddy reading" with their reading buddy, or just read by themselves. This literacy library will include books from various genres and interesting topics. I want my students to get hooked on reading, move from level to level and improve their comprehension.

This project will provide differentiated reading instruction for my students. You will make it possible for my students to read a variety of genres on their individual levels and increase their reading comprehension without ever leaving their classroom. Just to hear them say "SHHH! We're Reading" would be music to my ears.
