I teach Kindergarten at a title one school. The majority of my students are considered "at risk" or "poverty" students. I have a large amount of ESL students in my classroom each year- usually around half of my class.

The obstacles my students face is mainly language barriers and lack of prior experience. A lot of the students come into our school with little exposure to the English language or no real learning experiences.

ESL students need visual and audio clues together to help them understand concepts. The listening center will be a part of my reading program to connect the sounds of letters with pictures for students. It can also be used to help in our science lessons on the senses. Listening centers work well with students who need something more oral than written, which is a good number of my students.

Kindergarten is a year where students learn to love learning or hate it. You can help to eliminate frustration in learning the sounds for many children, helping to build their love of early reading by building their confidence. By believing and supporting my students, you are making future leaders and parents who can make this country a better place.
