Mrs. B. Corridor Alternative Elementary School
Eugene, OR Grades 3-5

If you ask Dr. Seuss, he'd tell you, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Reading is a critical content area for all students to be successful in life. At our alternative elementary school, we are lucky to have electives for first through fifth grade, where we can teach reading and other content areas in fun and innovative ways. In my electives, which have first through fifth grade students, I have students online using digital books, reading stories on iTunes, and even creating their own creative writing and recording themselves on laptops. In a year, I could have the entire school take my elective (260 kids). In my fifth grade classroom, our new reading curriculum has fabulous reading resources, which require listening to stories. My students absolutely LOVE using the laptops, even during "free time" to do extra reading.

This is where our problem lies. With 30 laptops blaring a story at different moments and sometimes up to 50 students doing activities on these laptops at a time (partner readers from other classrooms sometimes), it makes listening to these stories very difficult. I cannot do whole class activities because it is simply impossible to have all the kids listening to a story independently or in pairs at a level that they can hear it, while providing students with a quiet learning environment. This becomes disheartening for me as a teacher, as I know headphones for these students are too expensive for me to purchase. As of right now, I have 3 pairs of headphones that I purchased out of pocket, and are now falling apart from over-use. We try to borrow from other classrooms, but our school teaches reading to all grade levels at the same time of day, so headphones are VERY hard to find for every student. I feel like a horrible teacher when I tell kids to record their voices or listen to a story, but have to repeat "PLEASE TURN DOWN YOUR VOLUME!" for an hour. The kids' excitement simply burns out when I tell them to do this.

By simply one push of a plug in a laptop, our classroom environment can change immensely. If each child had their own headphones, we could listen to their digital reading curriculum to enhance their reading instruction. Students can also create their own creative writing, record their voices, and FINALLY hear their voices reading the stories (something they don't get to do normally). My electives will be transformed into a digital wonderland, as students can now delve into iTunes, GarageBand, and other digital reading resources. We could not normally do this with so many kids and so many computers making so much noise at one time. This will not only empower my students to plunge into reading and writing, but also will build that love of learning that is so difficult without the resources we need. And, this could benefit the entire school, as we have an open door policy for sharing materials between classrooms as they are needed for other projects in other grades/electives.

You could be the change that makes my classroom what I dream it to be. You could be the person who helps me push that student who normally wouldn't read on their own to sit at a laptop and read all afternoon. You could be the person who provides 50 students with the opportunity to create and listen to their own stories without their teacher harping on them to turn off their volume. I cannot do it without you, and I want to thank you in advance for reading this and for your support. Who knows...I might have the next Dr. Seuss in my classroom!
