Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach AP Literature and Composition to seniors in high school. We are in a very high-need area. The majority of our students are second language learners and their families work in local agriculture.

In terms of literacy, our students have much more "ground to cover" than the average student. They are not only functioning conversationally in a second language each day, but they need to use that second language academically. (Imagine you had to decode, comprehend, and write an analysis of an original science document written over 300 years ago in a language other than your native one--that's Shakespeare for my students.) Now place these same students on the stage of Advanced Placement, and they are competing with students who are native speakers and experts in using it academically because they have been immersed in it their whole lives. Linguistically, I know my students are phenomenal because they can function so well in two languages, but I also know that they face a challenge each day when they come to class.

My job isn't to just teach them to analyze literature, but I need to assist them with the challenges of academic literacy as well. While we do have an especially strong literature anthology for poetry, it does not include Hamlet, which is the cornerstone of any solid AP Literature course (if you can analyze Shakespeare, you can tackle anything). I have been photo copying the play for my students each year from an old anthology, and testing out select scenes and speeches from this same side-by-side edition I am requesting. I know that with this modern translation of Hamlet, I can assist my students in understanding the nuances of Shakespeare's text. When students can read the “surface” meaning of Shakespeare’s words (“what” Shakespeare says), they can more easily return to his original language and break apart the techniques (“how” he says it). The modern translation will not be a substitute for the original text; in fact many students read the play at least twice over since they read both the Shakespeare side, and the modern text. All quizzes, essays, homework, and discussion will be based on Shakespeare's original text.

Your help will enable my students to read and analyze AP level literature—Shakespeare—with confidence and success. They will be a step closer to their peers throughout the country who face the AP exam in May just like they do. Only now they'll have a better shot at earning a "5."
