Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am extremely excited with the enthusiasm my students possess in terms of reading. I am a second year ESL teacher of twenty-two fifth grade students in the Bronx at P.S.246. Ninety percent of my student population is Hispanic, five percent are Albanian, and the other five percent are Vietnamese. My students become really excited when they visit the class library and the school library to exchange books however, the class library selection is limited. When they borrow from the school library, the time limit is one week for one book. My students are second language learners and need more time when it comes to reading text. I want my students to be able to borrow books out of their class library and keep it for as long as they need in order to read and understand the text. This is why our class library needs books, books, and more books. The library is in desperate need of chapter books that focus on friendship, sports, fantasy, and animals. These are subject areas my students really enjoy reading. We need 200 books that range in reading levels from third to fifth grade. Reading really intensifies learning new vocabulary in our fifth grade class. This learning process helps their writing tremendously. The reading catapults it all. Class 5-3 is in desperate need to read!
