I teach Technology Education to both 7th and 8th grade students. In Technology Education I use hands on projects to teach students about different career opportunities. Designing and Engineering are great career opportunities and this project will teach the students about these careers.

My students are most excited and interested in learning when they are doing hands on projects. I have found that lectures just do not work in the Technology classroom. The students zone out in the first 15 minutes and you have lost them. So when I introduce material I find it best to do it in small spurts with a reinforcing activity follow-up. Such as in my flight unit where I have introduced hot air balloons and then we make hot air balloons. Then I introduce rockets and we make rockets. This is a successful unit and I would like to include gliders in this unit.

To make the gliders I will need balsa wood, wax paper, bond paper, rubber bands, wood glue, and scissors. This will give the students enough materials to make a glider. This project will serve and benefit my student by introducing them to another aspect of flight. It will also introduce them to the design process and team work. I really feel it is important for students to know the design process because it will help them in many occupations in the future and teamwork is an important skill to learn since as we know there is no one project that is a success because of only one person. It takes a team to make things successful such as a launch of a rocket.

You will make it possible for my students to have an exciting learning opportunity in a hands on situation. You will allow my students to learn valuable skills in a non threatening environment where they can learn how important it is to attain these skills. Since our legislation has decided that students need to start choosing a path at this early age of 7th and 8th grade, I feel it is important to utilize hands on projects like this one to help them decide on whether this type of work is what they want to do in the future.
