Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the art teacher at a charter school that serves a population of students from diverse family backgrounds of whom which 80% receive free or reduced lunch. The students range from 7th-10th grade.

Our situation is unique. We have been sharing a building with our sister school for the past three years since the opening of both schools. However, while jointly serving K-9, we have outgrown our campus. We are now in the process of changing school sites. Due to this move and the sharing of our commodities, we are at a lost for supplies and materials. Furthermore, we are no longer serving K-6 and need to build a high school art program from scratch.

It is absolutely necessary for our classroom to have electric sharpeners and a paper cutter. The students go through drawing pencils and colored pencils at an astounding rate. The students will need to have drawing boards. They will use these on a daily basis. So, although these items are not intended for a particular project, they will be used repeatedly in many assignments for many years to come.

Many of my students have never experienced ART as an outlet. Your help can provide a space that lends gravity to their creativity and holistic potential.
