Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade in a public school with 73% low income and an over 80% minority population. My students have a variety of diverse learning styles. My classroom has 28 students.

In my room, I have divided my students into eight smaller cooperative learning groups. Each group is a small community with roles and responsibilities. Groups do both group and individual inquiry based projects. These projects require each group to do a group presentation. I currently have one dry erase board and two old, cracked, chalkboards that do not hold chalk. Currently,there is not enough room for my students to do their presentations at the board.

Having reflected on my teaching style during my national board certification process, I restructured my pacing, instructional style, and group design. Groups are designed around the students learning modalities, and I have decreased my direct instruction to allow for more differentiated instruction. My students excel when they can present their research. With two more 4'X6' dry erase boards, all groups can not only present their work but they can also compare and contrast their work to others because I will not have to erase the board each time a group presents. This currently slows down the pace in my room because everything must stop because of the limited board space. Two new boards will also give me a chance to circulate around the room and work with those students needing help. Having boards will also allow me to assess information while giving my students more freedom to work independently. For my students who are auditory and visual learners, they will have increased opportunities to be engaged and on task.
