I teach General Science and Technology in a public school. I have three eighth grade classes and one sixth grade class.

Our school is in two buildings; one with grades 5 and 6 and the other with grades 7 and 8. I would like to engage and excite all students' interest in science topics through multimedia projects and online resources. Students will create their own science videos and I will be able to show science videos that I download from YouTube and other sites. This is difficult since I use two different science labs in two different buildings. It is a lot of prep if I just want to show a quick video or visit a website. Our school does not have a DVD burner so only students who have this equipment at home can make DVDs of multimedia projects. My MAC desktop is also not always compatible with projects that are done at home. Sometimes, even the simplest PowerPoint will not run. YouTube can be a great source for showing quick and engaging science principles but it is blocked at our school so I can only download at home. Once a video is downloaded it can be called up and shown quickly without waiting for the school's system to respond. Downloading ahead of time is less invasive on the school's server, so other teachers will not be affected my by streaming.

I could take a notebook computer with me to each classroom to set up quickly and keep the momentum going with students. They will get to see short science related videos that I have prepared which will get them excited about the topic - such as a skate boarder exchanging potential and kinetic energy by going up and down a ramp. This laptop also will be good for student media projects since my school does not have a DVD burner. They will be able to download and burn student made movies (assignments) as well. Many of my projects give students a choice as to how they want to show me their mastery of the topic and making a short video is one of them. This helps engage students that may not normally be interested in science. I will also use the laptop for our Textbook software to generate lessons, labs, demonstrations, assessments, with the interactive White Board(MIMIO), and for the grading software that I use. Valuable time will be used for student engagement and learning.

You will make it possible for my students to experience science through a media that they can relate to. Once they are introduced and excited about the topic, they will be eager to learn more through hands-on experiences and then communicate what they have learned in a meaningful way. I will be able to spend more time coaching them and less time transferring information form computer to computer or waiting for the school's server to respond. Thank you so much for helping make learning science important and interesting to my students.
