Motivating the Unmotivated student is a challenging but rewarding task. I currently work in a high need community teaching 6, 7 and 8th grades. My students come from very disadvantaged backgrounds and many of my students are in the foster care system. I work with only special education students and teach them Math.

Even though my students are very behind, they are still required to learn the same materials as their peers and having a classroom filled with mainly visual learners, technology would make this much easier. My classroom does not have any technology in it, and whenever I bring my laptop in, the class goes so much easier. It is easy for me to bring my computer in and allow the students to search the Internet (on particular sites of course!) and also use math games that complement what I am teaching in class.

Bringing my laptop to school has shown me that my students need technology. Having at least two computers in the classroom would allow me to have small groups working on the computers and also have a small group working more closely with me. The key to teaching special education students is to work in small groups and also have them motivated to learn. I believe that by having better technology in the classroom would motivate even the unmotivated students and give them a reason to want to come to Math class, and want to learn the concepts being taught.

Your help will ensure that my students have an equal chance at getting an education. This project will replace something crucial in my classroom, that may potentially unlock something in my students and cause them to be excited about math. Knowing that they will be able to research the origins behind a certain mathematical concept, knowing they will be able to do their math project on the computer, and knowing that they will be able to play a math game are all things that I believe will boost them into the realm of wanting to understand math a little better than they already do. Please donate to this project, so that my students can have the equipment necessary to succeed.
