Mr. S. Osbourn Park High School
Manassas, VA Grades 9-12

I am a high school English and journalism teacher in a Virginia school system that serves a very diverse student population. Each high school in our district is designated a specialty school--ours is Biotechnology.

After the very enthusiastic reaction from students to a broadcasting unit in a journalism class, with the blessing of a very supportive administration, we developed curriculum to initiate a year-long broadcast journalism course to expose students to TV production and media theory. Despite the fact that we launched the course with few resources, the students managed to produce nine episodes of a weekly student-centered news program. They filmed each episode with borrowed video cameras and edited the show on a single six-year old iMac. Since our school was besieged by budget cuts, we will not be able to update any equipment.

The students put in long hours of writing, filming and editing; however, we are forced to view their final productions on a television that seems to be on its last legs. The picture is cloudy, and starting to fade at the edges, and the set is even too large for our space (the desk it which it sits is starting to buckle). The students would most certainly appreciate being able to see their productions on a functional TV that could display their work in a manner befitting their efforts.

Your generous consideration would most certainly give my students an opportunity to explore an interest that is so seriously under considered in modern education--media literacy. Despite the lack of equipment, these 34 juniors and seniors wrote, filmed, produced, and edited nine episodes of a news program, which were broadcast on the school's closed-circuit television system and made available for download on the school's homepage. This is the very first time in our history that students have ever this opportunity, which they relished. It is our goal to continue to develop this program, and with your support we will most definitely make major strides. Thank you for your time and consideration.
