Life in a Bookstore and Beyond

The cost of a trip to Borders, the purchase of 3 books per student, and the neon tags for each book, is $639, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are sixth graders at Hedges Elementary on Chicago's South Side. Every student in my class receives free or reduced lunch. Many of the 25 students in my homeroom class have little experience outside of their own neighborhood. They rarely go to a library (other than when I offer to meet them for project research) and are even less likely to visit a bookstore. I saw a great project at a school in a more affluent neighborhood last year where students traveled on a field trip to a local Borders bookstore. What a great idea! The purpose of the trip is two-fold. First, students learn how to choose appropriate books from an experienced children's book specialist at Borders. Second, students choose three paperback books in which they have high interest to add to the permanent classroom library. After purchasing the books, we hold a dedication ceremony at which the students put a neon name plate in the book as a lasting recommendation to future classes. Because the books are student chosen, they are guaranteed to be high interest for the current class and future classes. As my students are all second language learners, reading up-to-date compelling books will take them far in school and in life. For a small amount, we can take a bus excursion to a Borders bookstore, have a children's literature specialist perform a read-aloud for our students, and allow our students to purchase 3 books each for our classroom library that they and their fellow students will want to read for years to come. Thanks so much for helping our class!
