Pictures make great stories! I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in an alternative middle school for children with behavioral issues.

My children have few ways to express themselves but love to write and share stories. Being able to share this experience will increase their self-esteem and self worth.

I would love to provide my kids with digital cameras in order to photograph the world around them. We would take pictures of everything. Then they would write detailed stories to accompany the picture. These stories would be put into books that would be shared with lower grade students. We would then read the stories to the classes and present them with the book for their classroom. The benefits of this project for my students would be vast. They would improve writing skills, learn the skills of photography and improve their self esteem by being successful in their completion of a project that would benefit others in helping them read fun stories.

Giving back is a good way to help the behaviorally challenged student learn that they too can do good things with their abilities.In their 1st project they will take pictures, write stories for those pictures and compile books for lower level classes in the building. They will go to these classes and read their stories. Having them do the photography, the writing, the reading, and then give the books to others, shows them that they can learn and still feel good about themselves.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
