Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our urban public school is located in an area in New York City of high poverty and filled with second language learners who come to school each day as eager to learn as we teachers are to teach them. The population reflects the local community, which is predominantly Hispanic.

Our library was renovated several years ago. While we are, and always will be, grateful for the new, clean and safe space, we require materials to enhance the environment even more. The books are fastidiously cared for by the staff and student volunteers. Access to the library is a highly sought item and it is always humming with responsible activity. The books are clearly labeled, grouped by genres, and augmented by stuffed animals and other artifacts that tie into the collection. When you walk into the library, your first impression is the dynamism of the interplay between the books and the collection of artifacts the librarian has managed to acquire (most frequently by spending her own money.)

We propose adding several versions of dolls and accessories from the American Girl collection. Part 3 includes the doll, books and accessories in the “Addy” collection. This doll is a logical choice because she represents the Civil War era, and, more specifically, the class born into slavery, a poignant topic studied by the 5th graders in our school during their Civil War unit. According to the books in her set, Addy and her family manage to escape slavery and wind up living in 1864 Philadelphia.

The doll and accessory items will be displayed with Addy’s hardcover historical fiction book set, a visual hook into reading that will have the set at the top of every student's reading list!
