Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach ESL students. They are older than average and have below average communication skills, particularly in the academic arena. They have above average aspirations, as do I for them.

Language development is difficult to document. Think about your child. One day he or she cannot speak. Then, suddenly, your home may seem like a latter day Babel. Gradually, that language becomes more sophisticated. Why? Because you speak to your child; your child speaks to others; and your child reads books, listens to music, watches movies and T.V. Does your child remember? What does he or she do when he sees those home movies? I would like to document my students' oral language development as a way to complement the reading and writing portfolios that I keep to track their progress. I would invite students to establish when and what to record. We would do these recordings 3-4 times a year and compile them for an end of year project.

The Flip Ultra will put in my students' hands a tool that will allow them to document both their own and their peers' journey in learning English with limited class time associated with managing the technology. My research and this product's popularity suggest that it's a good classroom solution that will serve and benefit students.

You will make it possible for my ESL students to see how far they come in a short period of time. It's tough for them to get excited by the books they've read or the stories they've written. They'll flip when they see and hear the difference in their own presentation in the space of the ten month school year.
