I teach Life Skills Support to 9th and 10th grade students in the inner city. This is a special education class, and my students learn skills that will increase their independence for when they graduate.

Each of my students has domestic goals that need to be met, such as cooking, cleaning and laundry skills. However, we have no oven. We have been using the microwave for the past year. We have made many creative microwave dishes. Having a real oven in our class would mean so much since most of my students will have ovens in their homes. The opportunities to create with food are endless. My students love the Food Network, especially Rachael Ray. We have many cookbooks and the students have great ideas for food to cook on their own.

We need a free standing oven, with a stove top. This will enable my students to follow recipes, become independent within the kitchen and be creative. Many of my students will live with their families or in group homes. We all know that the center of any happy home is the kitchen and they would all benefit from being able to participate with what they've learned in our school.

Your help with this proposal would mean so much to my students and our entire classroom. You would make it possible for them to learn kitchen safety as well as how to be independent within their own homes. Learning to cook can bring knowledge into the classroom as well as culture.
