Therapy dog + books = Far-fetched readers!

My students need trade books to read. I have 20 kids, and our textbooks just aren't enough! We would like to read Muggie Maggie, Stone Fox, All About Sam, Balto, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Charlotte's Web. All of the students just got done buying their own copy of Old Yeller, please help us with more titles!

Our class pet is a therapy dog! It's true! My class is "far-fetched" when it comes to reading. I currently have a therapy dog that I reward my students with each week if everyone reads a book, within their reading level. I have been amazed at how well this has worked! Currently, my class has read more books than the other 3 third grade classes - COMBINED! And at an 85% passing rate! Parents and administrators are amazed at how hard my students will work in order for Trooper to join us on Fridays!

We only have those big heavy textbooks. Hey, third grade is a big deal! We want to be independent readers! Give us a challenge! Give us a book with no pictures (well maybe a few)!

We need some trade books. Rather than having a story out of a text book to read, I want to assign a chapter! This will empower the students to start thinking and reading at a higher level.

Think back to your third grade classroom. Wouldn't you have worked a little harder, read a little more, if you had a cute, lovable, intelligent therapy dog as a class pet? Who has a dog? Everyone has a gerbil, mouse, fish...but who has a dog? Everyone wants to be us because we have a dog! Won't you help us out?
